Everyone has heard a moving horror story. If you’ve managed to avoid one yourself, consider yourself lucky, and heed a few tips to make sure you protect yourself—and your valuables—when you move to a new home on the Westside.
Do your research
Researching movers should be high on your list of things to do when you first start to think about moving to a new home on the Westside. The best and most highly recommended movers often book up quickly, and you don’t want to end up delaying your move in, having to settle for a questionable company, or, even worse, doing it yourself!

Protect Your Move also has great resources including information about whether a mover’s license is current and if there have ever been any federal complaints against them.
Get multiple quotes
Going with the first company you talk to may work if they have a stellar reputation and come highly recommended by people you trust. But getting more than one quote and making sure it’s based on your specific circumstances, not assumptions and estimates, is one of the top moving tips that can help identify the right resource when moving to a new home on the Westside. “Get quotes from at least three moving companies, and make sure they do in-home assessments so your quote is as accurate as possible,” said HGTV.
Watch out for the lowball bid
Those horror stories about mover fraud make for good cautionary tales. The best way to avoid one is to be wary of bids that are considerably lower than others.
“Massachusetts officials sued one moving company and New Jersey officials sued two for providing low-ball estimates and then grossly inflating fees after loading the trucks,” said Consumer Reports. “One of the companies had threatened to auction the possessions of customers who didn’t pay.”
